Worm Inn
Worm Inn Journal – 03-24-21

I really want to do a better job tying up loose ends here on the blog. Over the years there have been quite a few projects started – and written about – that ended up falling by the wayside, never to re-surface again! haha
One of the projects I started up last fall that came very close to vermicomposting oblivion was my Worm Inn (using a keyboard stand for support). Over the months I (thankfully) had the good sense to periodically water it and add various deposits of food – but a bad scuttle fly invasion discouraged me from doing too much more with it.
Generally, the system has at least remained moist enough in the middle to keep slowly chugging along – but it seems a recent warm spell must have accelerated the drying process. Thankfully, on a whim I decided to do a check-up today – quickly discovering that it was nearly bone dry.
At first I assumed I had killed everything off with my negligence – and decided I would just (more…)

The last time I wrote about Worm Inns it was “Day 425” of my “Mega Reboot” project, more than two years ago (yep, the only thing consistent around here is how all-over-the-place I tend to be! Haha).
Since that time, I’ve discontinued most of my indoor vermicomposting activity here at home (where I am quite limited for space) and have shifted the focus over to my dad’s place. He has a large basement, and an empty first floor available – and has always been very supportive of my vermi-shenanigans.
Now that I am consistently getting over there at least once or twice a week for extended chunks of time, things are starting to gain a bit of momentum on the indoor vermicomposting front.

Worm Inn Mega Reboot – Day 425?!
When it rains it pours – as far as badly neglected (RWC) worm composting systems go (and just you wait – I have another one to write about that is an ALL-TIME personal record for me!).
Back at the end of November 2016, I started up a “Mega Reboot” project with quite a lot of fuss and fanfare (I created an entire “Fun With Worm Inns” project out of it.)
The last time I posted an update here was (more…)
Worm Inn Mega – 1-24-17
If you have not yet signed up for my “Fun With Worm Inns” follow-along series it will probably seem like a long time since my last update.
The good news is that things are coming along nicely with the project!
Early on I took things nice and slow. Other than the almost-negligible quantity of scraps I added during the set up process and a short time thereafter, there were only two small feedings (1.79 lb on Dec 23 & 5.39 lb of Dec 31). I was worried about a pretty serious outbreak of gnats and some form of large-bodied fruit flies in my VB48 system (since my Mega doesn’t have its screened lid anymore).
But this month has been a different ball game altogether. As you’ll learn in the video, I added (more…)
Worm Inn Mega – 12-09-16
Today I finally got my (ragged, old) Worm Inn Mega system up and running! Be sure to check out the very first blog post in the series if you are just joining us.
Of course…in true Compost Guy style…since my last update, I have managed to end up with a serious fruit fly & gnat infestation in my basement. I brought in a bunch of material from my outdoor beds – including some rotten pumpkin from Halloween – and added it to my VermBin48 system.
I guess there were a few fly/gnats eggs in there!
😉
(If you watched the last video you will know that I am operating, initially, without the zippered mesh lid – easily one of the most advantageous features of the Worm Inn)
Never a dull moment around here!
Bottom-line, I need to be (more…)
Worm Inn Mega Reboot – 11-28-16
It’s been a LONG time coming, but I am very excited to announce that I have finally decided to get a Worm Inn Mega set up down in my basement again!
As some of you may recall, I ended up having to take down my last Mega system (probably a couple of years ago) since it was taking up room and we were about to get some work done down in the basement. I have had an outdoor Regular Worm Inn project (links to last post in that series) since that time, but it’s just not the same!
When I finally tracked down the old Mega in my shed this morning, I discovered that (more…)
A Tale of 3 Worm Inns?
My good friend (and WFA member), Steve Bichlmeier sent me an email last week sharing some info about his testing with different kinds of composting worms in his Worm Inn Mega systems. It sounded like a really interesting project overall, so I asked Steve if he’d be willing to share his updates here on the blog.
I’ll leave you to guess what he said!
